In general, standard wisdom puts sump pump replacement timelines at three to ten years, depending on the source. But with such a large range of years, how can you tell when you have waited just a bit too long to get your most recent replacement? Here are a couple ways you can tell you need a sump pump replacement:

How To Know If You Need Sump Pump Replacement

  • Rust – If you can see rust on your sump pump, it could be due to corroded batteries. However, it may also be a specific type of bacteria, sometimes called Iron Bacteria. The presence of this bacteria can cause problems and lead to clogging, which usually indicates you will need to replace your sump pump soon.
  • A Malfunctioning Motor – If your motor gets stuck, runs frequently or all the time, or stops working entirely, then it might be time to think about getting a sump pump replacement.
  • Odd Noises – If your sump pump is making odd noises while it is running, the odds are that something is going wrong with the inner workings of the pump. At the very least, you will need an inspection, if not an entire replacement.
  • Vibration – If your sump pump is vibrating excessively while it is functioning, this is another sign that something is going wrong.

Although these are some of the more common problems, this list is not exhaustive. If your sump pump is giving you any reason to suspect it may not be working as it should, we recommend calling us in for a free estimate to see if there is anything wrong.
